United Nation General Assembly(UNGA) decided to observe June 26th as International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking since 1987. Supported by various individuals, communities, several organisations and governments all over the world, UN raises awareness about this day each year. Theme for 2018 being
“ Listen First – listening to children & youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe”
UN office on drugs and crime has over many years been actively involved in launching campaigns to deploy support for drug control teaming with the organisations and encouraging people to actively take part in these campaigns, promotional events, public rallies with mass media involvement.
According to UNDOC, nearly 200 millions people have been victimised to drug abuse such as cocaine, cannabis, hallucinogens, opiates & sedative hypnotics worldwide.
Govt of India has taken several policies and other initiatives to take with drug trafficking problem under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. It constituted Narco- coordination centre in 2016 along with signing various bilateral agreements and MOUs with it’s neighbouring countries. Narcotics Control Bureau have been constantly upgrading it’s schemes and softwares for seizure of illegal drugs & making online database of drug offenders.
Assisted by concerned authorities and international organisations to facilitate coordination & universal action various Govts have come together for prevention & suppression of illicit trafficking of drugs and other substances.
